How to Hire a Whatnot Host

Written by Justin Dunphy, Founder of LiveLaunchPublished Updated 3 min read

A Whatnot host is part salesperson, part entertainer, and part product expert. The right host can transform a channel; the wrong one can stall it. Here's how to evaluate, pay, and train hosts — and when it makes sense to outsource.

What makes a good Whatnot host

Great hosts share a few traits regardless of category:

  • Sales ability — they know how to create urgency without pressure
  • Energy that holds attention for an entire show
  • Product knowledge, or the discipline to learn it before going live
  • Pacing — knowing when to hold an item and when to move on
  • Composure when chat gets difficult
  • Reliability — showing up on schedule, every time

Where to find hosts

Look for people with live sales, retail floor, or on-camera experience. Watch existing Whatnot shows in your category to see what strong hosting looks like. A paid trial show is the best interview.

Compensation models

Hosts are commonly paid in one of these ways, or a mix:

  • Hourly or per-show rate
  • Commission on sales generated during their shows
  • Base rate plus a performance bonus or commission

Align pay with the right outcomes

Commission rewards sales but can encourage underpricing if not paired with pricing rules. A base plus bonus is a common balance.

Training your host

Give hosts product briefs, brand guidelines, and pricing rules before their first show. Review recordings together and set clear goals — GMV per hour, buyer count, and engagement. Pair new hosts with a moderator so they can focus on selling.

Why brands outsource hosting

Recruiting, training, scheduling, and replacing hosts is a management job on its own. Many brands prefer to work with a team that already has trained hosts, a studio, and a moderation process. LiveLaunch provides hosts as part of our Whatnot management service, alongside operations and fulfillment.

Frequently asked questions

Can LiveLaunch provide Whatnot hosts?

Yes. Our hosts run shows from our studio as part of a managed channel, supported by live moderation and fulfillment.

Should the brand's founder host shows?

It can work well if they have the time and on-camera comfort, but it's hard to sustain a consistent schedule. Many brands use dedicated hosts for regular shows.

How many hosts does a channel need?

It depends on show frequency. Having a backup host protects your schedule when someone is unavailable.
